Getting Started — Understanding DNA for Genealogy
- International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) — The gold standard reference for genetic genealogy. Covers all test types, terminology, and techniques at every level from beginner to expert. Start here if you are new to the subject.
- Eccles Institute of Human Genetics — University of Utah — Clear, well-illustrated explanations of genetics fundamentals. Excellent background reading before interpreting DNA results.
- Dr. Kerchner’s DNA Resources Page — Particularly useful for his Genetic Genealogy 101 introduction and his Genetic Genealogy Glossary of terms and definitions. A good reference to bookmark for ongoing use.
DNA Testing
- FamilyTreeDNA — The testing company used by the Dillman DNA Project for Y-DNA testing. If you are ordering a kit to participate in our project, order through the Order a DNA Kit page to ensure your results are linked to the Dillman project automatically.
Supporting the Project
- Make a contribution to the Dillman DNA Project — Donations help fund DNA kits for new participants. Because the DFA is an all-volunteer organization, 100% of every contribution goes directly to the project for the benefit of all Dillman researchers worldwide. Contributions may be made as a personal gift or in memory of a loved one.
Advanced — Haplogroup and Population Databases
- YHRD — Y-chromosome Haplotype Reference Database — A forensic and population genetics database particularly useful for researching German and Central European Y-DNA lineages. This is a technical site that assumes prior knowledge of genetic terminology and haplogroup interpretation.
